In the late afternoon Embarkation on MS Johann Strauss in Mainz, which is located right at the mouth of the river Main into the Rhine. The ship leaves the town after midnight.
Right at the mouth of the Moselle River into the Rhine Koblenz is located, *city walking tour through the picturesque Old Town, where you can admire the most important sights. Afterwards, MS Johann Strauss turns back and now passes the most romantic part of the Middle Rhine by daylight. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is lined by numerous medieval castles, ruins and by the legendary Lorelei rock. On the very same day MS Johann Strauss arrives in the charming wine-growing town of Rüdesheim. The *walking tour leads you from the ship to the centre of Rüdesheim with the famous Drosselgasse with its many wine taverns. During the night the ship changes from Rüdesheim to Mannheim.
Arrival in Mannheim in the early morning. Coach excursion to one of the most beautiful cities in Germany – *Heidelberg. The old town is idyllically located on the Neckar and is the epitome of the “German Romanticism”. After the city tour return aboard in Mannheim. The next port of call is the emperors’ city of Speyer, one of the oldest German cities. Here, a *walking tour takes you through the Old Town to the impressive Cathedral of Speyer, St. Marien, the largest preserved Romanesque church in the world and also an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. In the evening, the cruise continues upstream on the Rhine.
This morning MS Johann Strauss arrives in Strasbourg. During the following *coach excursion you will discover the Alsace Wine Route as one of the most famous and picturesque tourist routes in France. A winetasting is included in the trip. Back in Strasbourg you will be introduced to the Alsatian capital after lunch. In the old town, which is surrounded by the river Ill, you will find the important monuments that make the city famous, including the impressive cathedral, the House of Kammerzell or the pretty tanner quarter „Petite France“. In the evening you continue your journey by ship.
This day is dedicated to the Swiss „pocket- sized metropolis“ – as Basel likes to see itself. During the morning *sightseeing tour in order to explore the beautiful old town, which combines 15th century buildings with contemporary architecture. The heart of the city beats at the central market square, which is dominated by the red town hall with its imposing tower and the playful facade painting. The silhouette of the city, on the other hand, is dominated by the Basel Cathedral with its two towers. The Middle Bridge over the Rhine, which was opened in 1226, is also a striking landmark of the city. After lunch on board, the rest of the day is at your free disposal in Basel. Later the ship sets sail for cruising the Upper Rhine River downstream to Breisach, where the ship arrives around midnight.
Starting from the German Rhine town of Breisach, you start in the morning for a coach excursion to nearby *Colmar on the French side of the Rhine. The city enchants with its unbelievably rich cultural heritage. Numerous flower-decorated half-timbered houses adorn the canal-crossed centre to play all its trump cards in the well-known „Little Venice“ district. Back on board, lunch will be served while the ship leaves Breisach for a leisurely afternoon cruise on the Upper Rhine.
During the night MS Johann Strauss reaches the final destination – Mainz, disembarkation after breakfast.
