Embarkation in Vila Nova de Gaia on our ship which is directly opposite the old town of Porto at the Rio Douro. On the same evening the ship departs to Bitetos where it will anchor few hours later.
Enjoy the beautiful river panorama in the morning and get to know the crew while having a welcome cocktail. From a short stopover Foz Távora you leave for the excursion to the Quinta Avessada including lunch and live entertainment. Just in time you’re back for dinner at the ship and where you see a Folk Show in the evening. The ship will stay overnight in Pinhão where you visit also the tiled railway station.
MS Douro Spirit leaves Pinhão in the morning directing to the Spanish border to Vega de Terron. There you take part in an excursion to Castelo Rodrigo, which counts as one of the twelve historical villages of Portugal. The Castelo belongs to one of the 14 listed ancient monuments and is famous for its castle under the same name: Castelo Rodrigo. Tonight, the Captain’s Dinner is waiting for you! The ship moors here for the night.
By coach you get from Vega de Terron to the Spanish university town Salamanca. Amongst other highlights your city walk includes the arcade lined Plaza Major, the eldest university of Spain and the Casa de las Conchas. Furthermore, you will see the old and the new cathedral as well as the Roman bridge Puente Romano. During lunch you will be fascinated by a breathtaking flamenco show. You will return on board in Barca d’Alva where you enjoy a typical Portuguese barbecue.
In the morning our ship is leaving Barca d’Alva. At another short stop-over in Foz Távora you start your excursion to Quinta do Seixo, where you look forward to a port wine tasting combined with an amazing view over the Rio Douro. After that you visit the old bishop city Lamego in the heart of the vineyards with its cathedral and museum. Back to the ship for dinner in Peso da Régua, where it moors for the night. Tonight, the Captain’s Dinner is waiting for you!
Morning program is visiting the Mateus palace which was built in 1745 and where you enjoy a nice promenade in the park as well. The return journey to Peso da Régua leads you through vineyards and smooth hills. In the afternoon MS Douro Spirit leaves directing to Porto. There you are just in time to enjoy the sunset at the estuary mouth where the Douro turns into the Atlantic. For the last two nights, the vessel anchors in Vila Nova de Gaia. In the evening you get fascinated by a traditional Fado Show on board.
Vila Nova de Gaia offers an overwhelming view across the Douro of the second major city of Portugal: Porto. Houses and streets look like a big colourful labyrinth. Your Porto roundtrip starts at Cais da Ribeira and leads you to the historical Alfândega. Of course, you may prove your taste in one of the typical port wine wineries. You return on board for lunch and spend the afternoon in Guimarães which was elected Europe’s cultural capital in 2012. Narrow streets and old squares framed by medieval houses form the city centre at the foot of the old castle.
