Itinerary

Day 1
Embarkation on MS Johann Strauss in Amsterdam. The ship stays in Amsterdam for the night.

Day 2
MS Johann Strauss stays in Amsterdam while you join a *sightseeing tour which includes a canal cruise. Afterwards the ship leaves Amsterdam and crosses the IJsselmeer. Thanks to a man-made dam it has been separated from the North Sea. Your next destination is the beautiful harbour of Hoorn, a former site of the East India Company. During a *walking tour you explore sights such as De Waag and the tower that was built in 1532. Continuation of the cruise through IJsselmeer in the evening.

Day 3
The ship sails upstream the Rhine River until it arrives in Düsseldorf in the early afternoon. From here, a coach excursion leads to the important, vibrant Rhine city of *Cologne. During a sightseeing tour through the Old Town you can explore this vibrant city. Among others you will pass the Cologne Cathedral that is on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the third-largest cathedral in the world. Furthermore it is the most visited sight in Germany. In the meantime, the ship has moored in Cologne, so that you can get back on board comfortably.

Day 4
From Koblenz the morning is used for a coach excursion to the cold water geyser in *Andernach, where you can learn more about this fascinating natural phenomenon. Back in Koblenz a *city walking tour to the most important sights at the Old Town follows. After the ship has left Koblenz, you enjoy the river cruise on the most romantic part of the Middle Rhine and past the Lorelei rock, steeped in legend. In the late evening, MS Johann Strauss arrives in the charming wine-growing town of Rüdesheim.

Day 5
The *shore leave in Rüdesheim includes a trip on the mini train „Winzerexpress“ into the centre of the small town, a visit to „Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet“ and a walk down the famous Drosselgasse, lined with wine taverns. After lunch on board, there is still some spare time left in Rüdesheim, before MS Johann Strauss and many other illuminated ships leave for the romantic Middle Rhine Valley in the late afternoon in a convoy. On your way back to Rüdesheim, you will pass numerous large fireworks from Trechtingshausen – so that the Rhine is submerged in “flames“ in a spectacular way. The spectacle ends around midnight with a big final firework between Rüdesheim and Bingen - an unforgettable experience!

Day 6
Arrival in Mannheim in the early morning. Coach excursion to one of the most beautiful cities in Germany – *Heidelberg. The old town is idyllically located on the Neckar and is the epitome of the “German Romanticism”. After the city tour return aboard in Mannheim. The next port of call is the emperors’ city of Speyer, one of the oldest German cities. Here, a *walking tour takes you through the Old Town to the impressive Cathedral of Speyer, St. Marien, the largest preserved Romanesque church in the world and also an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.

Day 7
In the morning arrival in Strasbourg. Full day excursion by coach through the *Alsace region: First you enjoy a city tour in Strasbourg, the charming Alsatian capital. Then by coach through the Alsace wine region to Colmar. The city enchants with its half-timbered houses, the „Litte Venice“ district and its churches. The excursion includes lunch in a restaurant and the reembarkation at the German harbour of Breisach.

Day 8
With arriving to Basel you have reached the final destination of your cruise, disembarkation after breakfast.
